Sweet truth of the day

March 8, 2011

There is no need to ask about the expiration date of the Bisous Ciao Macarons, Lower East Side, New York. Chances are that they will last somewhere between 3-5 minutes in the bag. Even though it’s closely tied with a pink ribbon and the macarons are tucked away in a box and layers of paper, and are almost too pretty to eat. Almost. I tried the chocolate, espresso and chai versions and I have to come back soon and test the entire range. Go get yourself sugared out if you are in the neighborhood.

Dark chocolate.

Lemon.

Peppermint chocolate.

Pistachio.

Masala spiced chai.

Macarons on parade. (also the title of a very rare Rage Against the Machine single only released in Japan)

It makes me laugh…

New favourite phrase: recipe porn

June 9, 2009

This is in fact something that should be avoided, according to the authors of one of my favourite cookbooks “Chocolate Bar”. They preach that baking should be kept simple:

Picture 1

“Avoid the seduction of recipe porn which will tempt you with a litany of exotic ingredients and gorgeous, glossy perfect (and often impossible to replicate in real life) photos … like you, we have jobs and family and friends and appointments and we don’t have the time or stamina to re-create these works of art.”

My words exactly! I’m not sure that Eva, the creative cake extraordinaire, will agree with me on this, but as long as it’s brown and tastes of chocolate I’m happy :)

Just a little more about cake…

I personally prefer the crunchy edges on a heavy, chocolate filled brownie. I always end up with the middle of a cake, looking like it’s been attacked by mice who could only reach the edges… But I found the solution at fredflare . I just love those little things that makes your life just a little easier.

It’s not like I’m all about cake…

April 7, 2009

It’s just that I tend to over do stuff, and yet friends always ask me to create things for them, wonder why. This time it was a birthday cake for 30 people… I could have made a classic chocolate mud cake with icing… but no. I chose to spend around 7 hours baking, mixing fillings and braiding coloured sugar-fondant… the braiding alone took me at least one episode of “californiacation” and two of “CSI”… but it was a success and it tasted like little fair lemon angels tiptoed across your tongue.
